"Stalk" Lake Scavenger Hunt Results
It took 18 minutes for the team representing the Springville Museum of Art to clinch the $1,000 donation.
Wow. That's all I can say, other than a BIG thanks to all her participated. I wish you ALL could have won...
For those of you who missed it, here's a look at the two teams that walked away with donations: Springville Museum of Art ($1,000 Grand Prize) and the Utah Refugee Coalition ($100 Barnes & Noble "Spirit Award")
We always like it when the governor drops by. He stopped in to congratulate the Springville Museum of Art on their win. (Note: Please ignore the riffraff in the foreground ;))
“It doesn’t surprise me that a team from Springville would win a scavenger hunt,” joked Governor Gary Herbert at the finish line as he congratulated Jessica Weiss, the Museum’s team captain. “Don’t all the best scavengers come from Springville?” The comment was an affectionate reference to his wife, a Springville native, who has a knack of finding treasures wherever she goes.
The speed with which the museum completed all the tasks shocked organizers and participants alike. At 9:05 AM, team captains were given a list with 10 clues that led to clue cards needed to claim the donation at the finish line. At 9:23 AM, it was all over. The rules were simple: one team member had to run 2.3 miles and cross the finish line with all 10 clue cards. How the runner got the cards was entirely up to the team captain—who was encouraged to be resourceful and proactive.
This no-holds-barred approach to the hunt was inspired by Rhea Jensen, the fictional protagonist of the book “Welcome to Stalk Lake City,” written by event organizer, Sheralyn Pratt. Rhea Jensen is a private investigator obsessed with fitness, who earns large paychecks by solving difficult cases quickly and thinking outside the box. Weiss, took that approach to heart in her preparations.
“First thing I did was recruit a marine to be my runner,” says Weiss. “My next recruit was a Salt Lake friend who doesn’t own a car and walks everywhere in Salt Lake. She was my ‘ringer.’ Then, for the entire week leading up to the event, I made lists of businesses I thought might have the clue cards during the scavenger hunt and positioned team members there the morning of the race. None of them were right, but once I had the clues in hand, I was able to redirect my team to the right locations. We had three of the clue cards in hand in the first two minutes, thanks to two Salt Lake teens who read about the event in the paper and decided to get up early on a Saturday for a good cause.”
In addition to the Grand Prize, sponsor Barnes & Noble awarded a “Spirit Award” to the Utah Refugee Coalition, for having the largest team and also finishing in second place—gathering and completing the course even after they heard that the winner had been announced, before throwing the gauntlet down for a re-match next year.
All participants were awarded sponsor coupons as a thank you for their involvement and as a thank you for all the good they do. All will receive a free Thai massage from Whole Body Connection, $8.88 off any LOTUS purchase, and a voucher for a free voice lesson from AFM Vocal Studios. Other sponsors include Barnes & Noble, Cedar Fort, CDI Media, The Score, Alexander’s, and Welcome to Stalk Lake City.

VIDEO FOR TEAMS
Here it is: the video for teams about this Saturday's event. Please leave any additional questions in the comment area to be answered publicly.
Also, ONE BIG CHANGE: in an attitude of inclusion, ONLY the "Finisher" must run the entire distance. Everyone else can use any form of transportation they would like to gather and transport clues, as long as they remember to be SAFE. No one wants to get hurt, so please obey all laws and navigate safely.
That said, here's the video! See you Staurday morning, August 7th at 9:00 AM. (And a big thank you to Kayla for putting this video together!)
Last note: There's a typo in the vid where it says once that it's Saturday the 9th. Whoops! Don't let that throw you, though. It's the 7th. We promise :)

$1,000 GRAND PRIZE UP FOR GRABS
TEAM REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JULY 31, 2010.
Email: Non-Profit name, Tax ID, and team captain name to stalklake5k@gmail.com
On the first Saturday of August, local Salt Lake companies will donate $1,000 to a non-profit organization. Will it be yours?
Read on to find out how your non-profit can win!
But first, look at the right side bar. The companies listed there are the sponsors of the "Stalk Lake City Scavenger Hunt," held August 7, 2010. Please check out these great local companies that are making this event possible.
As for the event: picture the Amazing Race. It's kind of like that.
The "Stalk Lake Scavenger Hunt" begins in Liberty Park in Salt Lake and ends in the Farmer's Market in Pioneer Park by the Gateway. Each team captain gets a list of clues leading to clue cards stashed at local businesses en route to Pioneer Park. The first team to collect 10 clue cards from participating local businesses between those two locations and find the finish line wins!
In addition to a Team Captain, every team needs a FINISHER. This is the only team member required to run from the start line to the finish line where they must cross with the 10 clue cards--one of which they will collect themselves to learn where the finish line is in Pioneer Park.
That's the short version, but the rules are as follows:
* One team per non-profit
* Teams can be any size
* Teams must represent legitimate non-profits
* Non-profit MUST be capable of receiving credit card contributions
* No cars or other forms of transportation allowed besides the feet attached to your body
* Phones, Internet, and other information gathering devices totally ARE allowed
* All participants must be 16 or older. Have everyone younger meet you at the finish line
* Between the two parks, each team has to collect 10 cards from different categories by solving clues
* First team across the finish line wins $1,000 for their non-profit/charity
* Second team across gets $100 for their non-profit from Barnes & Noble
* Obey all laws, don't cross on greens, jaywalk, or otherwise set yourself up for a bad day
* You CAN scheme, be proactive, place people strategically around the city before the race begins or do anything you can do on foot
* No, not all team members need to be there. You can have a team member helping you online from Boston if you like :)
Sponsoring teams will each send a check to the winning team's non-profit organization in the week following the event. And to help ensure your team wins, it would be wise to understand who the organizer is: Sheralyn Pratt.
Sheralyn is the local author of the Rhea Jensen series. In Book 2, "Welcome to Stalk Lake City," private investigator Rhea Jensen moves to Utah from her home in Los Angeles. Both athletic and intelligent, Rhea has a knack for getting to the bottom of whatever case is thrown her way--athleticism, intelligence and familiarity with Salt Lake will thus be great tools in winning the "Stalk Lake Scavenger Hunt." Sheralyn will drop clues on her blog and on Twitter (@sheralynpratt) starting in July to help those teams that are feeling a little proactive get a head start on questions that will be posed on August 7th.
Wise teams might keep their eyes open for potential clues in these areas in advance, but all teams are also welcome to look them up the day of (and possibly lose time doing so). To stay in the know, join the Facebook Event page.
Sign up starts now, so sign your team up by emailing Sheralyn at stalklake5k@gmail.com. Include Non-Profit you're competing for, its Tax ID number and the team captain's contact information.
Best of luck!
